White smoke coolant loss?

I am tearing down my engine to change the head gasket. Upon removing the timing chain cover i was wondering if water could be leaking past the gasket on it. If so it could be going into the oil pann and thats is how it is getting into the cylinder. How can I tell if it is?White smoke coolant loss?
don r has it right but be sure to clean any dirt/carbon by vacuuming the space where piston rides the cylinder walls. That dirt can tear up rings quick.White smoke coolant loss?
I would think that you might have a crack in the engine block or heads .I don't know how many miles you got on the engine but it would just be easier to get a rebuilt engine and put in.This way you have a good engine for another so many miles along with a warranty. But if you do go that way get a long block it comes with the head or heads. The engine block would have to be magnaflexed to find a crack either in the heads or engine block. You can get a better deal going with a new engine or rebuilt type.hgm20002000@yahoo.comWhite smoke coolant loss?
You are going to change the oil after you put the engine back together. That's just what you do. Any adulterants will go away with the old oil. Timing chains use the same oil as the rest of the engine. Coolant can escape wherever a bad head gasket is leaking and you will see where that is when you take off the head. Get some sleep. Fix it tomorrow.

Have the head magnafluxed or alumifluxed (if aluminum) to make sure it has no cracks. Have it checked to make sure it isn't warped. You're doing too much work to leave any of this to chance. Wire brush the combustion chambers and piston crowns to clear out carbon.White smoke coolant loss?
I actually had the exact same problem with a 1994 Ford Escort. One day it started blowing out lots of white smoke. I took off the valve cover to see what the oil looked like and the whole inner side of the valve cover was covered with a white and oily slimy mixture. It was probably because I actually had a blown head gasket...because a few months later the engine overheated and messed up the sleeve bearings in the block. All because ALL of the radiator fluid had either evaporated or gotten into the oil.

Nissan ALMERA 2001 1.5 petrol, misfiring on motorway + check engine light out?

Hi

I bought a Nissan Almera 1.5 2001 model from an auction, I noticed it was misfiring a little on the motorway and when I press the accelerator down hard, it likes misses a beat.

I had a mechanic look and he said the check engine bulb is out or removed and a sensor on the side of the engine has been changed recently.

He thinks the timing chain has stretched causing the misfiring (a common fault) and because of the light and the changed sensor reckons the owner knew this thats why he auctioned it with 4 weeks tax and MOT as the work will cost 500 pounds, so advisees to put the car back into the auction.

Is there any cheaper solution? can I get the light back on some how?

any suggestions appreciatedNissan ALMERA 2001 1.5 petrol, misfiring on motorway + check engine light out?
Your mechanic is spot on with his diagnosis. There is no cheap fix as the sensor has already been replaced, and the bulb isolated to %26quot;hide%26quot; the problem at the auction.Hope this helps

Can someone please help me with this Pre-Al homework question?

Heres the question, can you help me?

A calling chain is set up so that every person calls three other people. Anita needs to let her coworkers know that a meeting time has been changed. Suppose it takes 2 minutes to call three people. In 10 minutes, how many people will konw about themeeting time change? show your reasoningCan someone please help me with this Pre-Al homework question?
After 0 minutes, only Anita knows: 1 person

After 2 minutes, she calls 3 people so 1 + 3 = 4

Assuming they wait until the 2 minutes is up before calling, after 4 minutes those 3 people call 3 each so 9 more; 4 + 9 = 13

After 6 minutes the 9 new ones call 3 each so 27 more; 27 + 13 = 40

After 8 the new 27 call 3 each so 81 more; 40 + 81 = 121

After 10, those 81 call 3 more = 243 so 243 + 121 = 364 know after 10 minutes

  • If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?

Pick a day. Is it because it was one of the best days of your life, or the worst? Would you do it all the same again, or would you change how you lived it. (If you can't pin it down to ONE day, then how about a certain time period, or a chain of actions)If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
I would relive high school, so I wouldn't be such a dweeb. :-)

Actually, there are times in high school that were great, so those I would just relive. The rest I could change. If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
i'd relive it, it would be to see my grandparents again =/If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
I would Relive My Horse Back Riding Lessons. I loved Them. Also Hanging out with my friends last year.If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?

Relive the day I turned down my true love because I was scared...I'd definitely do what I wanted to...sigh. Things would be soooooo different. Amy Denise Barrios, are you out there?...If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
'twould be a combination of them both: to relive and, perhaps, change...to make better even if it could not be made better, simply being there again would be satisfying enough.

deep question. If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
i'd probably choose to go back to my kindergarten years. i remember this bully who used to pinch me for no reason and all i did was nothing. i hated myself everytime i think of that now.. for being so weak..If you could relive one day in your life, would it be just to relive it or to change your actions?
I would relive the day my dad died in the hospital. I would go down to connecicut to see him before he died.

I would of told him thank s for giving me life even though you didnt care to be in it.

I would cry so hard that every tear would burn.

And would stand there and watch as cancer took him away from the world.

I would show him what I was, and who i was and what his influnce never made me.

If only i knew my dad.

I would still have stopped smoking which is the only good thing about his death.

I have several days that I would relive and several that of course I would change. Probably the most recent was the birth of my new grandson.....and I have three prior to him. Those 4 days were the most amazing days of my life to see my daughters give birth and become mothers.....it is totally amazing. To become a mother is a wonderful gift from God....and when you are with your children while they are giving birth to your grandchildren, it is the most wonderful moment that I have ever experienced in my entire life.

How do I get my Singer Overlock to sew mock safety stitch?

I had a problem with the 4th needle (4th to be threaded) breaking. I rethreaded several times and changed all needles. It is no longer breaking, but it also isn't stitching. The thread just sits on top of the fabric without being Incorporated into the overlock chain with the other 3 threads. What am I doing wrong??? Could this be a timing issue? How would I fix that? How do I get my Singer Overlock to sew mock safety stitch?
The left needle thread isn't chaining?

Try changing the needle (and make sure it's well seated!), and twisting all four threads together after threading before starting the initial chain.

The other two likely issues are misthreading (take all the thread cones completely off the machine and rethread from scratch) and, alas, timing. How do I get my Singer Overlock to sew mock safety stitch?
On your serger, both needles when properly inserted should look like one is raised slightly higher than the other...this is the correct setting for the needles...Make sure both needles are the same size too....did you thread your upper looper first and then the lower looper and lastly the needles..

When I bought my serger many years ago I got a book at the library it was so good that I didn't return it...I was a bad girl and told them it was lost and I paid for it because it was an out of print book......I learned a great deal from this book and has taught me many useful and in plain English some wonderful tips on the essentials of serging.....threading the machine in order is absolutely essential for the loops to form properly and not to break when serging....go to the library and check out a few books on serging ......You will be more fruitful with the knowledge you gain from the info..

    Part-time chain smoker?

Well, I am usually against smoking, but I tried it once when I first turned 18 just to try it, and i probably smoked like 3 cigs that month. Then about two months later i decided to smoke three in one day. Now (probably 2 months later) this week I decided to smoke again, for unexplainable reasons, and i started off smoking 7 cigs the first day, and my throat burns sooo badly and i keep coughing up mucus. is this normal? as a side note, i smoke marlboro smooths (menthols), if that makes a difference.

PS: Please do not give me **** about how smoking is bad. i know this, and i dont think that some stranger on the internet is going to change my opinion.Part-time chain smoker?
This is okay. But you should smoke every day, and that way, it will not affect your throat. You have to build up a good tolerance, and then you will be fine.Part-time chain smoker?
Yeah, it's normal. The toxins are irritating the lining of your throat and the mucus is your lungs desperately trying to clear the crap out.

I'm not going to try and change your mind about smoking, I need people like you or else I wouldn't have a job.

See ya in 30 years!Part-time chain smoker?
I agree with the above . thanks for being there.

    Cha ching!Part-time chain smoker?
You are young so I'm not going to call you a F****** idiot. I'm 55 years old, smoked for about 32 years %26amp; that is my only regret in life. My lungs are in such bad shape now. This coughing your describing is nothing compared to my day. Try waking up in the middle of the night cause you just start coughing %26amp; you can't breathe. Then when you wake up in the morning, you cough for the first 15 min. or so. If that's not bad enough you get coughing attacks throughout your day. I thought if I quit smoking (which I did 6 yrs. ago) that this coughing would end. Well a little to late, my lungs are shot! In fact I have an appointment this thurs. with a Pulmonary doctor. Also the menthols are worse for you. PLEASE give up the smoking before you get the habit.

Distributor set wrong in 1999 jeep grand cherokee?

I changed the crankshaft in my jeep. I made the mistake of not marking where the distributor was at before taking it out. The jeep starts now but when it feels like it. How can I fix this or know the right way to put it in? Also the engine light is on with the code for the timing chain, but I think the whole problem is the fact that the distributor isn't in the right way. Any suggestions?Distributor set wrong in 1999 jeep grand cherokee?
The distributor is meshed to the cam shaft. If you have changed the crankshaft you may well have got the timing chain out by a cog or two. If you didn't remove the cam shaft or distributor then they are both aligned perfectly and the chain must be misaligned.Distributor set wrong in 1999 jeep grand cherokee?
get the repair manual and put engine on top dead center you did line up timing marks i hope them look for firing order and set distributor in so rotor aims at no1 cyl make sure you are on compression stroke

How do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

I recently had to change the head gaskets on my 97 ford expedition and had to take the 2 heads to a shop to get repaired and checked for warps anyways I finished putting everything back together and now it wont start it is obviously a timing problem because when I put it back together the timing chains were taken off and put back not in their original position %26quot;my father actually put the chains on I did the rest%26quot; as he has more know how about timing but he put them on wrong my question is how do I go about finding the correct position to put the 2 timing chains as they are completely off time and I cant take it to a shop because im piss poor broke for now %26quot;damn economy%26quot; any help is appreciatedHow do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?
First off, like already mentioned, these engines ARE interference engines meaning that valves WILL touch pistons if valve timing is off. With that in mind, you better hope that you haven't damaged valves.

To time these engines correctly, yes there are specific tools that are dedicated for the purposes of holding the cams and cranks into position for this procedure. But in absence of those tools (which I'm assuming is the case), this would be best done with two people on hand. First turn the engine over to the point where cylinder 1 is at TDC (it will be marked on the timing cover). Next, you'll need to remove both valve covers, the crankshaft pulley (which requires use of a bolt-grip type puller which I'm sure you know already) and then finally the timing chain cover. Remove both timing chain tensioners and compress them CAREFULLY in a vise, using a tiny flat blade screwdriver to push on the lock tabs as you compress it. Finally, insert a paper clip into the holes to hold them into the released position when you remove them from the vise. Now remove both timing chains. The crankshaft sprocket should be set where the mark is on the 6 o'clock position. You will now fold one chain exactly in half. On a 4.6L engine, you will mark one link with some kind of paint that won't rub off easily. And then you will mark the other end link with the same paint. The procedure is identical for a 5.4L engine except, you will mark one link with paint on the one end, and you will mark the two links at the opposite end. You will now begin with the driver side bank of cylinders and install the chain with the painted mark on the one link oriented with the mark on the crankshaft's INNER sprocket (so that this mark is at the 6 o'clock position). You will now have an assistant CAREFULLY rotate the driver side cam to where the dot on the cam sprocket is at approximately the 1 o'clock position, using either an 18mm wrench on the sprocket bolt, or a pair of vise-grips on the cam itself if it has the one-piece pressed on style of sprocket. BE CAREFULL WHEN THIS IS DONE, AS THE CAM IS UNDER TENSION. Next, have the assistant install the other end of the chain with the painted mark lined up with the dot on the sprocket (two painted marks if it's the 5.4L engine). Make sure the chain maintains this orientation as you reinstall the timing chain tensioner and torque the two 10mm bolts. Now verify that the chain is in proper time and pull the paper clip out in order to apply tension to the chain. Now repeat this step with the passenger side bank, with the chain installed on the outer sprocket on the crankshaft, and with the dot on the cam sprocket at approximately the 10 or 11 o'clock position. Once installed, reinstall the crank sensor ring onto the crankshaft, and then the timing chain cover and crankshaft pulley. Before reinstalling the valve covers, turn the engine over by hand using an 18mm socket and johnson bar on the crank pulley bolt. This is to ensure you haven't damaged any valves. Reinstall the valve covers and start engine to check for leaks or other issues. Hope this helps. How do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

My friend, I hope you haven't damaged the valves, if the chains are off then most likey you have. In order to time the motor, on a 5.4 you must have a timing chain tool kit that has the crankshaft holding tool and the camshaft timing tools, with out them you will never get it timed right, a 4.6 has copper colored links and with the the crank on top dead center and align the linksHow do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

  • I long will this poor maintained car last?

Im the owner i never did any required tune up.already has 100,000 miles. has a timing chain. has been driven real hard its a Pontiac vibe gt . So how long do you thinks it going to last. I did a oil change not to long ago it was kinda black and stiff. But all i do with the car is an oil change.I long will this poor maintained car last?
As far as I know, Pontiac never put an expiration date on the Vibe.

With the Vibe, the first tune-up wasn't due until 100,000 miles. So you aren't really late. If it requires a tune-up, do it now. All you really do is change the spark plugs and spark plug wires.

As for the engine, this vehicle uses a POS Toyota engine. This POS Toyota engine has the same sludge problems that the Toyota cars have. Even well maintained Toyota engine are prone to sludge problems. I would run some engine flush through the engine oil before your next oil change. Follow the instructions on the container.

Try this. Open your favorite Internet search page. Search for %26quot;Toyota Sludge%26quot;, without the quotes. You will see what I mean by this engine having severe sludge problems.

In the future, seeing this vehicle has a POS Toyota engine, I would use engine flush every other oil change to try to reduce the amount of engine sludge found in these engines. Also, change the PCV valve with every oil change as these can clog with sludge.

The timing chain in newer engines are designed to last longer than they used to. It was mostly the engines that used a timing belt that had the problems. The manufacturers liked the timing belts because they made less noise. However timing belts were prone to early failure. So they went back to timing chains which last longer.I long will this poor maintained car last?

Is it time to change our attitudes?

This is my opinion, but I feel that the majority of humans are ignorant to the fact that there are 100's of 1000's of other differant life forms that we have to share this planet with. Many of them were here long before humans came along. I understand that we are at the top of the food chain, because of our superior inteligance, but at the end of the day we are surviving in the way that we know how, just like a worm or beetle does. yet we consider the worm, beetle insect small animal to be totaly insignificant. Do you think it is possible to change the human attitude, and convince ourselves that this just isn't out planet, and we have to share it?Is it time to change our attitudes?
the problem with us humans is that we don't adapt like other species of animal. all other animals that share our planet adapt to suit their environment. hence polar bears are white while grizzlies are brown. tigers, which live in the jungles, are stripey while lions, who generally live in desert/tundra colourless places, are a boring tan colour.

but us ..... we adapt our environment to suit ourselves. and this is an attitude that needs to be changed. because if we continue with this, we're going to destroy (and very soon) the delicate balance of life on this planet and make it inhabitable not just for ourselves, but for the millions of other animals who live here.

i read an article yesterday about stampeding elephants in bangladesh. about 15 people a year die because of this, and the villagers always try to scare them off with lights and fireworks and stuff. the reason the elephants stampede through a village? HUMAN ENCROACHMENT ON NATURAL HABITATS.

I think we should change our attitudes, but it would be impossible to convince all those money-loving buisnessmen of that. It is a beautiful thought, and it has always been my opinion.

Calculus Questions (chain rule & finding f prime of x) I just keep getting wrong. =/?

    Okay, the first one is:

    f(x)= (-x + 3x^2e^5x)^4 Find f ' (x)

I was able to change it to: 4(-x+3x^2e^5x)^3 times chain rule, and I don't know how to break apart 3xsquared times e to the 5x).

Thank you so much for your help.

    The second question is:

    f(x) = 2x^2 times ln(arcsin 2x)). Fine f ' (x).

Thank you so much.Calculus Questions (chain rule %26amp; finding f prime of x) I just keep getting wrong. =/?
You have to use the product rule in combination with the chain rule.

    So f ' (x) = 4(-x+3x^2e^5x)^3*(-1+6x(e^5x) + 5e^5x*(3x^2))

    f ' (2x^2*ln(arcsin 2x)) = 4x(ln(arcsin2x)) + 2x^2 * 1/(arcsin 2x) * 1/(sqrt(1-x^2))

How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?

I have a 1996 j-body sedan with a 2.2 engine. I have an external leak in my head gasket (leaking coolant), that apparently is not affecting compression and there is no coolant/oil mix. I narrowed down my choices to 2 main options for fixing it:

    1. Have it fixed locally for about $1000 including gasket kit, resurfacing, labour and tax.

    2. Have it fixed by a friend who is a Toyota tech for about $500 (parts/labour/tax). But I would need to drive the car for about 300 hwy kms, and would likely not be able to have the cylinder head resurfaced.

Any thoughts? Would also appreciate suggestions of other associated repairs/maintenance that I should consider (timing chain and tensioner were done 40,000km ago, coolant changed 10,000 km ago).

Thanks! How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
If the enging did not overheat, then it would not likely have warped the head, so you should be able get away with passing sandpaper on the mating surface of the head.

Save the $$How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
that sounds too expensive either way.

There is a reason for the gasket to leak so I would certainly get the the head resurfaced. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Have the head checked for cracks and warpage. The 2.2 will crack near the front head bolt on the drivers side. Get new bolts too, the old ones may break. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Both people want to take you to the cleaners. you don't need to surface the cylinder just to replace the head gasket, as long as there isn't a crack you won't have a problem. If you have any tools do it yourselfe. Check your coolant to see if it's still at the required temp. for your area. I would get a third quote on the job if you can't do it yourselfe! How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
No way to tell till the heads come off. They'll just lay a straight edge on it and see if it's warped too much. The 2 friend hopefully won't put it back on if it's warped. If it is, he'll be able to get it planed for a whole lot less than $500.How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Resurfacing the head will insure that you have a good matching surface to the block. This is to guarantee that the problem does not repeat it self. Sometimes the pressure will cause a slight grove in the head. This grove may not be noticeable. In the long run it is better to resurface the head. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Cylinder heads have a set tolerance for warpage. If it us under, your OK. If not, the gasket will leak again. I would have it resurfaced. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
If it's leaking towards the front right corner of engine (while looking at eng from front of car) then just get it replaced. That is a very common leak area on the 2.2 chevHow important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Getting the cylinder head resurfaced is probably the best way to go. It will ensure that the gasket is seated correctly and compressed evenly. An even compression on the seal will help assure that it won't leak.

Another factor to take into consideration is that it might be a rough patch in the cylinder head surface that is causing the leak. In that case, you would HAVE to have it resurfaced, or else it will never seal.

One final thing to consider, is that if you take it to a shop, their work is usually guarunteed and warranteed. If something goes wrong and is the fault of the shop, they have to pay for it. If something goes wrong with your friend, you are SOL.

I would suggest taking it to a shop. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
take it to a mechanic localy that 2.2 engine has an aluminum cylinder head its very important to check the deck of the head and resurface if it needs it BUT U MUST CHECK IT. ALUMINUM IS PRONE TO WARP DESPITE BEING OVERHEATED OR NOT most mechanics especially backyard self taught no schooling mechanics dont know how to take an aluminum head off to help prevent warping spend the 1k ull get a warranty too. 1k is cheap compared to what i charge but i also check valves and spring pressure to because ur already there. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
you should always have it resurfaced

Derivatives: Chain Rule - Melting Ice Block?

A cubical block of ice is melting in such a way that each edge decreses steadily by 5.2 cm every hour. At what rate is its volume decreasing when each edge is 5 meters long?

Solution: Let l=l(t) be the length of each edge at time t. Then the volume of the block is given by V = _______ .

Since the length of each edge is changing in time, we conclude that the volume V is also a function of time t. We note that the rate of change of l is constant and that is given as [(dl)/(dt)]= _______cm/h = ________m/h.

The question is to find the rate of change of V when

    l= ____________m.

    The chain rule gives

    dV/dt = (dV/dl)*(dl/dt)

Therfore , when each edge is 5 m long, the rate of change of the volume of the ice block is ________m3/h.

I don't know how to approach this question..

    Please answer..

Thank youDerivatives: Chain Rule - Melting Ice Block?
    Volume of a cube with side l is: V = l^3

    dl/dt = 5.2 cm/hr = 0.052 m/hr

    Find rate of change of V when l = 5 m.

Ok, for this last part, you need to use the chain rule as you have it stated: dV/dt = (dV/dl)*(dl/dt)

Now dV/dl is simply the derivative of the first equation with respect to l. This gives:

    dV/dl = 3l^2

Now plug this into the equation for dV/dt.

    dV/dt = 3l^2*(dl/dt)

    Now you can substitute in all the constants, l = 5 m, dl/dt = 0.052 m/hr, to get:

    dV/dt = 3*(5 m)^2*(0.052 m/hr)

    = 75*0.052 m^3/hr

    = 3.9 m^3/hr

Hope this clears it up for you.Derivatives: Chain Rule - Melting Ice Block?
    V = l^3 = 5*5*5 = 125 cubic meters

    dl/dt = 5.2 cm/hour = 0.052 meters per hour

Since V = l^3, then dV/dl = 3l^2 (as long as each edge shrinks at the same rate).

    Then dV/dt = (dV/dl)*(dl/dt) = 3l^2*(dl/dt) = (3*5*5*)(0.052) = 3.9 cubic meters per hour.Derivatives: Chain Rule - Melting Ice Block?
    dl /dt = 5.2 cm / h

    dl /dt = 0.052 m / h

    V = l 鲁

    dV/dl = 3 l 虏 m 虏

    dV/dt = (dv / dl) x (dl / dt)

    dV/dt = 3 x 5虏 x 0.052 m鲁 / h (when l = 5m)

    dV/dt = 3.9 m鲁 / h

E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?

I have a 98 328is, does it have a timing belt or a chain? How do I know when it should be changed? My car has 132,000 miles, and I'm not sure when or if it has been changed. Is there any way to check? I've heard that the timing belts in Audis can wreck the engines if they break...

ThanksE36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
You have a timing chain. Chains are obviosuly much more reliable then belts. Your chain can become loose over time but it is rare that these break. I would start thinking about having the timing chain inspected and maybe changed within the next 10-15kmi. Normally there is around 3-4 degrees of slop around 110kmi, anything after that you will start hearing noises and your performance will suffer.E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
Well thank you for saying you have a 328is BECAUSE it COULD be a belt or a chain if you just say E36. Don't bother doing anything with the chains now at that mileage its coming due for its next head and gasket. AT ABOUT 5 THOUSAND dollars (done right) All the 328s of your cars time blow gaskets almost on a regular basis. Sure don't believe me now but next week or 2 years from now you will see, its as certain as the sun will come up tomorrow.

I just can't stand it when people use %26quot;E%26quot; terms. Its so vague. While I have no interest in the new junk built from the late 80's to next years models and so on. People talk about stying power performance, and what not EXCEPT over all reliability.E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
As stated by other, you have a chain. If you hear a rattling sound coming from the front of the engine, particuarly at start up, then be suspect of the chains tension and after some wear and tear it's very unlikely, but not impossible, that the tensioners can fail.E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
a chain.you should be more worried about nicosil borewear if you have a m52 engine fitted wit single vanos.E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
You have a timing chain. The reason they switched to chains, was due to the high temps making the belts wear quickly. The chain produced better performance. Check this link to see more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M43 There are several dealerships that are willing to do a check for you with out cost. They view this as a way of earning your business. Also, if your car was serviced by an authorized BMW service center, they will have a record of if and/or when your chain was replaced. They can look it up by your VIN.E36 BMW: Timing Belt or Chain?
    onephatguy69,

You've cited the M43 engine, which is not used in the asker's 328is. The 328is uses the M52B28 engine, which evolved from the old belt driven M20 engines from the 70s and 80s. The belts lasted as long in those in any other automotive brands, however rather than heat deteriorating them, it was typically oils leaking from the cylinder head near the valve cover gasket that typically caused the damage. It was never an issue for owners that replaced the belts before the scheduled interval of 60,000 miles or 4 years.

Back to the original poster: Your 328is uses a chain, as did all of the M50 based engines.

There is no reason to expect the chain to fail in the M50 engine under normal driving conditions. The chain may wear and get noisy, which can be solved by replacing tensioners or the chain itself. If you hear rattling noises though, it is far more likely to be caused by wear in the vanos unit.

EDIT: No Nikasil bore in US M52. Also, the general opinion in the automotive world is that if the engines have survived this long, they are fine. The fuels that were high in sulphur have been eradicated from the market.

Where should I take my Honda CBR F2?

I want to have this bike tuned up as well as the following:

    Stage one jet kit

    ignition timing

    chain and sprocket changed

how much would it approx cost and where would i take it to have it done?

thanxWhere should I take my Honda CBR F2?
Any motorcycle shop in your area should be able to do this job . As far as the cost goes, save yourself some money and do the chain and sprocket job yourself. Any motorcyclist should get familiar with their bike through doing their own work. The techinical stuff like the jet kit and the tuning though I would leave to a good shop. I do not not know what the rates are these days but I had the same bike 5 yrs. ago and it cost me about $100 to have my carbs synched and the bike tuned.Where should I take my Honda CBR F2?
Try and find a Dyno Tune for bikes. They are good for what you want to have done.

Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?

My brother has a 2004 Kia Rio with a 1.6L Mi-Tech engine. He has somewhere between 80k-90k miles on it. He knew it said to change the timing belt at 60k. Well he didn't... and I have already told him he was dumb so please spare me your insults.

Ok here is my question and I only want answers from people who have experienced a broken timing belt on a 1.6L kia engine.

Does it damage the valves and/or pistons?

The above was my question, the following is optional reading if anyone cares about details.

I have called several Kia dealers and these are the responses I got.

    2 said yes

    1 said %26quot;Kia tells us it is an interference engine, but I never had one come in that was broken so I don't know for sure%26quot;

    another one said %26quot;NO, not on the 4 cylinder engines%26quot;

I know quite a bit about cars, but I have never changed a timing belt on a Kia before.

Here are the facts and what I have read.

Someone on the internet stated they had a 2004 Kia Rio and the timing belt broke and they got it replaced and the car runs fine. But that was pretty much what they wrote no other details about what else was broke or what else was fixed.

I have read many posts that imply the valves break and damage the pistons, but none were on the same year or the same engine. But everyone of those posts said they knew there was damage because they either heard it or the motor was locked.

My Brother's car spins over very fast and smoothly just like a non-interference engine does when the belt breaks.

He was in a residential area driving about 25mph when it broke so he was probably turning somewhere around 2000rpms.

People have asked how fast the motor was turning when the belt broke I really don't understand why that even matters. it is either an interference engine or it is not right?

If the chain snaps on a bicycle the travel of the pedals are still limited to what they were before the chain broke reguardless of how fast you are pedaling. So I really don't see the difference in 600rpms and 4000rpms if it will cause damage it will cause damage at idle too, but I do understand the faster it is going the harder things will slam, so it may cause more damage, like valves breaking completely off and getting jammed in pistons and bending rods, etc...

So yeah. Anyone who has had a timing belt actually break on a kia 1.6L preferably a 2004 rio please let me know what the damage was if any.

And if you did anything more than change the belt did you do it as a precaution because it was recommended or did you do it because it was actually needed?Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?
Many Japanese and other engines are interference fit engines. The best thing to do is to change your timing belt and hope for the best. Once it is changed and a problem appears, you can easily remove the head and other things to repair the problem. Kia engines are more like Toyota engines. They do NOT have interference fit engines (in most of them, anyway). If there is any damage, it is usually valves that bend and need replacing. Good Luck!!Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?
certain engines if the timing belt breaks it can bent some of the valves but some dont so if you try turn the engine over and it is jamed your valves are bent if the engine still turns over then just get the timing belt done and it will be fineAnyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?

this is an arduous task that if done wrong will cost really big money to repair.

Turn this around on them; report them to the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce.

If there is a %26quot;watchdog%26quot; agency in your state, report it to them as well, and file a complaint.

In California, the agency is the Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair. It is administered by the State's Attorney General's office

For future reference, when dealing with a repair facility, if they don't offer a WRITTEN estimate, one that you either sign or initial, drive away and don't leave your car.

I would let them know that I never agreed to fixing it and if they have documentation indicating that I agreed to all these repairs with my signature, then I would like to see it. Other than that you will be happy to pay the $70 that is owed by you. Regarding your address, they can look it up by the registered owners address by the vin %26amp; license plate info they probably took down for their computer records. I'm suprised they didn't get your signature for the repairs before they completed them. I'm sure they won't do that again. ;)I took my truck in for a diagnostic that was to be $70, they called me%26amp;said that it might be the timing belt?
Here's the deal with the timing belt: if there's a problem with it, your truck will either not run, or run so badly that you couldn't drive it anywhere. A timing belt will either break or slip a tooth and it will go bad immediately, not get gradually worse over time. If your truck didn't go from just fine one minute to barely running the next, it's not the timing belt and they should know that.

If your truck is still not running right, you need to take it to a better mechanic. My expertise is maintenance, not law, but I think you owe them no more than the $150 you agreed to for further diagnostic work. If it were me I'd offer them $100 and tell them they're lucky to get that because I still need the money to pay a REAL mechanic, you know, the kind who FIXES things.I took my truck in for a diagnostic that was to be $70, they called me%26amp;said that it might be the timing belt?
I can't think of any truck with a timing belt.If you got your vehicle, then just stay away from those people. If by chance they find the truck and try ANYTHING,you just go ahead and call the police. The so-called service they did cannot be charged to you without a signed work order.Stand firm.I took my truck in for a diagnostic that was to be $70, they called me%26amp;said that it might be the timing belt?
You can bet they have your license plate number. Call the better business bureau. Thenyou'll be one step ahead.I took my truck in for a diagnostic that was to be $70, they called me%26amp;said that it might be the timing belt?
Pay the damn bill, you should have never taken the truck without talking to them anyway. besides, what does 70 dollars pay for anyway? What ever they did, if its fixed, just honer it and put it down to experience, there is no way your belt or chain would cause problems, its either working or not, so most likely in this case, they are telling the truth, and that not like me to say that. Just pay them and move on. Serious, the belt or chain, if it goes, it goes, and you would know about it, if the truck worked when you took it too them, it where definitely not the belt. Edx

2000-2002 Infiniti g20 Timing Belt or Chain?

Thinking of buying this car used between the years of 2000 to 2002. Does it use a timing belt or chain? Is a chain better than a belt? How often would you need to change either, and what estimate for the cost?

Any other remarks about this g20?2000-2002 Infiniti g20 Timing Belt or Chain?
You have a timing chain. Actually, there are three chains. Each head has a small chain that runs the two cams and then there is one that runs around both of the cam drives and this chain even drives the water pump.

Event is chains of rebels does exist because they don't break quite as easily. However, they do stretch quite a bit and the other flip side is that they are quite a bit noisier.

The approximate cost is about $400 give or take about 50 since we are going into the front of the motor and there's always the possibility of broken parts. It's not that we expect this to happen, but sometimes it does, so you are better off with a quote bearing a safety net.

G20s are okay cars, but they are a bit underpowered. Of course the flip side to that is greater economy.

You could always rationalize it this way: it's probably capable of maintaining any speed limit in this country. If someone were looking for a high-performance vehicle, they would not be looking at one of these anyway. Infiniti is a great car, hi line of Nissan. You get a lot for your money, and they last a long time.2000-2002 Infiniti g20 Timing Belt or Chain?
    G20 has a Timing chain.

Timing chain is a better choice for long service life, it can last a really long time. But it is more noisy, heavier and less efficient than the alternative of timing belt.

The alternative of timing belt, which G20 does NOT have, but some other comparable cars do, is that it is cheaper to make, and maybe lighter and more efficient for power... but it doesn't last as long, and if you don't replace it at the right time (perhaps 80k-100k miles for Dodge 2.2L, the only one I know from experience) then breaking of the belt means fatal problems when pistons hit valves left stuck open.

In comparison when a timing chain gets old, maybe it gets a bit loose and sloppy, and valves open a little slower and later than they should, but they don't hit pistons and don't blow your motor it keeps running but not as efficient as it could be with some service.2000-2002 Infiniti g20 Timing Belt or Chain?
Timing chain. You dont need to replace. I know this for a fact because my Dad owns an Infiniti dealership!

    1998 Cadillac Catera V6

Im thinking about buying a 1998 Cadillac Catera. It has 160,000 miles on it. The timing chain, and head gasket was changed at 155,000 miles. I just want to know how reliable these engines are? Also the price is 2300 dollars.

Good or BadHow long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
I'd say thats a pretty good price if the car is in good condition. I would highly reccommend having the car checked out by a mechanic before buying. The reason for this is with all the cadillac's i've ever experienced, the engine runs forever, but other things (shocks, alternators, belts, etc...) tend to go bad at high mileage, just like any other car but a cadillac usually costs quite a bit more to repair. How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
over priced in my opinion. do the timing chain again on it just to make sure it was done right. no, kidding.....

they're pretty nice cars, if maintained. looks to me like this thing has had some major work done to it. do you know why the head gaskets were replaced, and where it was done at? do you know if there is any other oil leaks or coolant leaks? all very important questions before you make this rather large purchase. what do you currently drive? do you need a car this fancy, or could you get by with something with a little better gas mileage? How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
Cadillacs seem to last forever, they make a reliable engine, keep the oil changed with the proper grade at the proper intervals and my bet is you will get at leat 225,000 miles or better on that engine. How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
Sure the engines are ok on those cars but its everything else that breaks around it. Those cars are not built very well at all. Its a good price but even minor repairs cost a ton on cateras

Does a 2002 Hyundai coupe S have a timing belt or chain and how often does it need to be changed?

It does have a belt, but if you start it in colder weather a lot that can shorten the life of the belt a lot, and so can a heavy off and on foot (hot rod) shorten the life. It's a belt, typically belts at least by 60,000 miles or first signs of cracks and wear.

The only thing you may need is a fan clutch tool. It's two large wrenches that fit the clutch so you can back it off. Other than that it's simple hand tools. This should be one of the easiest out there to do. The timing chain doesn't have to be touched. You will only have to remove the belt, the fan clutch, the rad hoses, maybe a heater by-pass hose and the water pump. Just take your time and lay out the pieces as they came off. Also, work neat and clean and use some type of silicone sealer in addition to the water pump gasket. Good luckHow do you replace a water pump on 1979 pontiac trans am 6.6L 403 with a/c?

No, this isn't a homework assignment. I model leveraged investment strategies and want to find out the effect of diversification across several funds based upon different indexes (mid-cap, foreign, sectors, etc). These indexes are correlated, although the correlation changes over time.

I have used historical data and multiple random stock price histories, but need to better understand correlation to have a higher degree of confidence in the results. I have not been able to create multiple random correlated stock price histories yet.

I am not 100% sure but this may be beyond the capabilities of Excel without an add-in like Crystal Ball or @RISK. At the very least, the add-ins should make the analysis you are doing trivial vs. a massive exercise in programming. How do I create a Markov Chain in Excel to simulate random correlated stock prices?
Use the link below for an add-in. It's the one called stochmod.xla.

What is this ticking sound coming from my motor while idling?

    I have a 99 GMC Sierra 5.3l v8 350 motor

the truck has 142k miles on it

I dont know if the timing chain has ever been changed

Could you tell me what could be the problem, and how much it will cost to fic?

Should I replace the chain? cost on that? What is this ticking sound coming from my motor while idling?
it most likely just valve tick, pretty common on the V8. if its valves ticking then its really not a problem more of a annoying thing. higher octane fuel cuts down on the tick

but you don't have a 350 you have the new 327 the 350 is 5.7lWhat is this ticking sound coming from my motor while idling?
The timing chain should be good for the life of the engine. It is more likely something in the engine head, probably worn out valve train. Expect to pay about 10 hours for labor for removal and reinstallation of the heads, plus probably about $500-$600 for machine work, if that is indeed the problem. Have a mechanic check it out to verify what is actually going on. Most will probably take a quick look at it for you for little to no charge,What is this ticking sound coming from my motor while idling?
that is likely a lifter that wont pump up good. if the engine pops and backfires or has a miss etc. its probably the lifter is ground away completely. if it only ticks at idle its likely the lifter valve/piston is just stuck. you will probably need to tear it apart to fix. make sure your oil is good. What is this ticking sound coming from my motor while idling?
How is the oil? have you checked the level and how many miles.

you may have bought gas with water in it. sometimes if you park you truck with an empty tank, it will rain and when you go to start it, the condensation will make it do that.

Take a pipe or piece of hose and run it around listening in one end of it to pin point the location. It could be bearings in the smog pump or something like that.

How hard is it to change head gaskets on a v6 4runner 90-96??

Ive done it on plenty of 4cylinders but never a v6 and never a truck is it a real pain in the a$s? something that I can do in a few hours? do the heads typically need machining? is there anything tricky to look out for? are they timing chain or belt?

most info with experience doing this job to answer and Ill give you best answer no prob.

thanks in advanceHow hard is it to change head gaskets on a v6 4runner 90-96??
There's a timing chain and it's not too bad but harder then the 4 because there is two sides to a v6. So literally twice as hard. Most of the time you can get away without machining the heads but it really depends on the mileage/how hard they were driven/climate matters too because cold driving tends to warp them. I've also heard it said that if they didn't need to be machined they wouldn't have blown the gasket. Kinda makes sense I guess. I'd say that if you did it alone with a proper garage it could be done in either one really long day or two to three days of 3-4 hours a day. I'd go to the local auto parts store and get a haynes manuel it will walk you through each step with pictures and hints and trouble shooting guide. All for only $20.

How to fix a timing chain issue with Honda CRV?

    1. after changing oil, I was able to start the car, but the engine would not idle.

    2. what is the possibility that the valve is damaged?

    3. what is the possibility that the motor is further damaged and needs to be replaced?

    4. can I get away with just replacing the chain? How to fix a timing chain issue with Honda CRV?
ok, first of all, you should know that the timing belt or chain in a honda is a critical part. if it is malfunctioning, DO NOT START OR ATTEMPT TO START THE ENGINE, You're asking, no.... begging: for valve damage if you do. Have it towed, have the chain replaced, period. End of story. You're gonna hear the same from others. -john in Iowa

How to change the Chain on a BMX bike?

I've been wanting to do this for a very long time now, but I have no idea how to. What i mean is like, ok, you put the chain in the teeth of the sprockets then how do you join the two ends. If possible could you send me a link to a video of this been done, or if you have the time could you please make one. Thanks for any advice, much appreciated! How to change the Chain on a BMX bike?
You probably got a masterlink with your chain. It's one side of a chain with two pins coming out of it and nothing on the other side, then a flat piece with two holes and finally a U shaped flat piece that locks it all together. That is the easy way. Also, you will want to use a chain tool to get it down to the correct length. How to change the Chain on a BMX bike?
u take the master link off then u get u put in the bike and put the master link back on.... but if theres no master link the u cant do anything be side hit it wi a hammer.. this happend 2 me yesterday... answer my ? i put out

  • What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?

One is a chain, one is a belt, of course, but what are the practical differences in terms of both short term and long term engine operation? I have always owned vehicles with timing belts, and have been told by many people that timing belts are better than chains, but I am going to be purchasing a vehicle with a timing chain and would like to know what I should expect. What are the differences? Do they have to be changed? If so, how often? Are they reliable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
Timing chains can last the life of the vehicle and no expense every x amount of miles to change them. They are meant to last forever, but if they do break it gets messy. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
Chains usually last longer than belts, but are more expensive to replace when you have to. You usually have to replace guides, sprockets, and tensioners with the chain. A smart person would have the tensioner and idler pulleys replaced with a timing belt along with the water pump if it is driven off the belt. Timing chains are very reliable as they were used for years before the auto industry got cheap and started using belts. If the brand of car you're looking at is reliable, or you have friends with cars like the one you are looking at, ask them how they are getting along with theirs. Check your owner's manual for replacement frequency as they differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
The life of the engine means the life of the engine. Nearly all cars that go to the junkyard still have a running engine. The rest of the car will fail before the engine will on a typical modern car. From a maintenance and reliability standpoint, chains are orders-of-magnitude better than belts. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
timing chains don't have regular maintenance intervals like a belt. they do need to be replaced in some cases, but only when or if they cause a problem. example, a friend of mine had to replace a timing chain on his 2004 honda accord when it jumped a tooth. that was ultimately the fault of a malfunctioning tensioner. On the other hand, i had a dodge dakota with over 250,000 miles with the original timing chain. overall they require less service. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
suggest that timing chains usually last much longer and do not stretch as easily.I would guess that a chain is more reliable then a Belt. Steel is much more tougher then rubber. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
The chain will last the life of the engine and will eliminate many hundreds of dollars in replacement costs. If they do start to fail for some reason, they will get noisy, but not fail immediately, like a belt, which will break without warning and most likely lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. Chains are better. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
given the fact that a belt is a dry environment type and a chain is a wet type typically, a chain will last longer but i dont know if i would go to the life of the vehicle, but given the fact that it is of a stronger material and lubricated, the chain type till last longer. a belt will last from 60,000 to 80,000 miles form what i have seen. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
I can't give much help BUT I just changed the timing chain on my sunfire. It does have 165,000 miles though...What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
ill tell yuou what, im a mechanic and i won't buy a car that has a belt just because i hate putting on timing belts, and if you weren't to do it, its a lot of money to pay for labor to have it put on with the water pump. and a chain you don't have to do anything with, the only thing that chains do over a period of time are stretch, but thats a longggg time, the odds are you'll never have to replace the chain. with the timing belt, you have to worry about maint. and if it breaks, worry about bending valves. so by not having a belt you save money in the long run. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
Chains are more precise; they don't stretch, so you can get better performance with precision valve timing

Chains are less prone to failure

    Chains are noisier

    Belts are quieter

Belts stretch and effect valve timing

    Belts break with wear

/What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
From my experience, the major differences between chain vs. belt has more to do with longevity, advances in engine design, and cost. When most engines used 1 camshaft and pushrods a chain was very practical. As more engines used overhead cams and eliminated the pushrods, a long belt was quieter and less expensive than a long chain. Timing belts tend to last about 75,000 to 100,000 miles before they break. A broken timing belt will ruin a head or engine block on an interference engine. Timing chains last longer and give more warning before they break ( as they stretch, they get noisy, and the belt tensioner or guides will fail before the chain) You probably won't have any trouble with either type of engine with the proper maintenance. What are the practical differences between a timing chain and a timing belt?
Something that was left out; is that engines that use timing chains are generally constructed completely different than engines that use a timing belt. Engines that use a timing belt are built to be as light as possible. Pulleys and belts are generally lighter cheaper than gears and gear trains. A bad thing with this design is that most of these engines are what engineers refer to as interference engines. If the timing belt ever fails; the pistons will hit the valves and usually cause major damage. Every engine that has a timing chain is not an interference engine. I have seen and heard of many that loosen and %26quot; jump%26quot; timing and just won't start or run well. Some even drop valves and keep running. I had a Ford Mustang that stripped the timing gears and only after replacing both gears, it was running again.

My vote goes to real metal or kevlar timing chains and gears.

I know Jeeps and many trucks go 300k + miles on the original timing chains.

Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?

I was just told that I need a timing chain for my 2004 Chevy Cavalier. I took it to the shop because it started jumping and shutting off when I slowed down or stopped at a light and eventually cut off though it would come back on. It would drive smoothly when I drove at a higher speed. Also, a very loud smell was coming out of the exhaust. I took it to the shop and he put it on the computer and it read rapid misfire so he advised me to replace the ignition coil. I did, but nothing changed afterwards and when I drove it home and tried to crank it up the next morning it wouldn't start. Now the mechanic is saying I need to replace the timing chain. He was wrong about putting the ignition coil on there, I don't know if he's wrong about the timing chain. This is getting pretty expensive. Can anyone give me some advice? If it is the timing chain how much will it cost to repair?Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
timing chains on 2.2 engines usually make noise before they go south, and when they do, its a done deal. the engine stops. most times they break, get jammed with broken pieces, and the engine locks up... until repaired. you need a second professional oppinion. the 2.2 has a history of bad timing chains,(the chain tensioner falls apart) does it sound NORMAL when you try to start it? spin too fast, make noise???Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
I'd check the owner's manual to see what is says about timing chains. And take the vehicle to a Chevy dealer for a second opinion.Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
so your car has a loud smell lol, it sounds like a timing problem all right, I've never heard of a rapid misfire but you may want to take it to auto zone and have them check it to make sure they check the COMPUTER for freeDo I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
Unless you have over 300,000 miles on the vehicle I fail to see how your timing chain would factor in to this issue.

u might look at the crankshaft position sensor.i have an 01 and it was acting really funky,i was puzzled as hell.i got a code reader and it ended up being the tps,in my mind it was totally unrelated to the problem but i changed it anyway and it ran fine ever since.get a second opinion,if ur check engine light is on,go to auto zone, get a free code scan.i don't think it's the timing chain.

Im going to replace the timing chain also i think you have to go through the water pump to thanksI need to know how to change the water pump on a 2000 dodge intriped 2.7 liter thanks?
you have to remove the whole front of the engine to get to it,if your not real familiar with doing this though it can be more than you want to take on to do,and you,ll need a good selection of tools to work with, they offer everything in a kit to do this with and that's the best way to buy the parts,if your going to attempt this at least buy a repair manual for it you,ll need it that i can guarantee you,the timing has to be right on this one or it will mess it up,good luck.I need to know how to change the water pump on a 2000 dodge intriped 2.7 liter thanks?
Dodge offers a complete kit new timing chain, guides, water pump, and tensioner. this is not an easy job. i would not recommend doing it if you don't fix cars all the time. but if your gonna do it this is the way to go. good luck.I need to know how to change the water pump on a 2000 dodge intriped 2.7 liter thanks?
you have to remove the timing chain to get to water pump. if you don't have some experence i wouldn't try.I need to know how to change the water pump on a 2000 dodge intriped 2.7 liter thanks?
need to remove upper intake valve covers, cover that goes on top radiator, remove fans, remove belts, crank balancer, a/c tensioner, alt tensioner, front timing cover, line up timing marks, remove timing chain primary tensioner, remove guides and chain sprockets. then you can remove water pump and intall in reverse sequence. dont forget to bleed cooling system or your vehicle will over heat within 10 miles of driving.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?

I own a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg edition. Its one of the nicest cars I've ever driven. However today the engine malfunctioned and cut off after I switched to 2nd gear and it wouldnt start again. Yes I know how to drive stick and every time I change gears I make sure I press the clutch all the way to the bottom. But today right before the engine cut off there was this weird and nasty grinding sound, I imagine it was the timing chain. the car is used and I know Jetta's need their timing chain changed every 65000 miles before a serious malfunction.I've only had it for one day But this is the first time it has happened to me since its the first Jetta I've ever owned and Im worried about the car, . Was the sound I heard before the car cutted off the timing chain snapping or something else ?2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
Well the nasty grinding sound could be a couple of things. It could very well be the timing chain, or the turbo breaking, or the rods cracking, or the pistons blowing a ring, Its really hard to say without opening the engine up. My wife an I have a 2001 Wolfsburg also. It has 108,000 miles on it and it runs great. the only problem that we have had is the piping came loose by the factory intercooler and was loosing boost by blowing air out. 10 minutes it was fixed and running strong again.2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
most likely the timing belt snapped, this is bad. With the broken belt you will need all the associated items to get to and replace the bent intake valves and possibly the exhaust valves. to check the belt, pop the cover on the passenger side of the engine. if the belt is loose or obviously broken then the above repair is needed which unfortunately is labor intensive. good luck2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
I have an 01 Jetta too, it's pretty, fun to drive, and I like it but it is a very unreliable little car. I've had mine for 6 months and mine broke down the first day I had it too and so far I've put about $2500 in fixing it and it still needs another $1000 in repairs right now. It's a nice car but it's a love hate relationship. I'd find a good mechanic who is used to working on VW's and become their friend, that's what I did and I have his number saved in my phone.2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
That doesn't sound like the timing belt to me. When the belt went out on my last Jetta, it made no sound even though I was in 3rd gear. It just quit going into gear so I had to brake and pull over and call a tow truck.

Also, the car should still start even with the belt out.

Actually the chain guide wears away at the chain tension devices in each head. Nissan Replaces all three chains and two chain tension shoes. I also recommend any worn guides be done while the timing chain cover is off. At your car mileage I would also replace the water pump too. Whirring whining buzzing noise is steel to chain noise don't wait to long. Other high mileage parts think about doing two radiator hoses thermostat and radiator with a new cap any power steering hoses that may be leaking, valve cover gaskets and fan belts too . Motor and power train assembly must be dropped out the bottom to properly perform the timing chain work on a front wheel drive Altima. How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?

I recently had a friend fix an oil leak on my '98 Nissan Sentra. The leak affected the timing chain, which splattered oil all over parts of the engine and alternator. He did a great job cleaning it up, but now my car seems too slow when it changes gears and I have to almost slam on the gas to make it go. Could working with the timing chain affect the way my transmission works or could this problem have been caused by anything to do with the timing chain? How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?
If your car is not in the correct time, it will not perform correctly. I am quite sure your transmission has nothing to do with the problem. But if he took the timing chain off, and put it back in close to original, but not quite there, it will run very poorly. You need to take it to a garage, and let them test out the timing. How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?
Might I suggest goint to a REAL mechanic next time? How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?
The timing belt has nothing to do with the transmission. However, the problem you are discribing, having no power, can be attributed to mistiming. So, if your friend took the timing chain off and put it back on wrong then yeah, that is probably it. Get it into a shop to have the timing checked.

Also, if this is a interfernce motor, which if it is a four-banger than it probably is, you want to be really careful. If the timing so too far off you will destroy your motor. How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?

How to fix a timing chain rattle on a 1999 Ford Explorer SOHC 4l V6?

I have one of these and did the whole timing chain - spockets - chains - gaskets etc and cost me more than $2,000 but the problem is now fixed and it is a joy to drive. Fortunatley or unfortunatley bought another with the same engine rattle on startup - but much less noise - the first car had all good looking removed parts that is chains, sprokets, but the mechnic did not give me back the tensioners - my question is can this problem be fixed by simply replacing the tensioners only? This one has half the mileage at only 55,000 km.

And does someone have the procudure for the shortest way to do that by myself?

Good news is timing chains do not need to be replaced, they just have to be re tightened. This is much cheaper than having a timing belt replaced, but I am not sure how much it would cost for foriegn cars. probably a couple hundred, go to a toyota dealership to do it.How much does it cost to replace a new timing chains?
Unless it is make noise you shouldn't have to do anything to it. if I'm not mistaken i believe Toyota uses a hydraulic tensioner which doesn't need any adjustment.

Im travel almost 120km per day, so need help to save my fuel consumption..

How often you guys change your timing belt/chain or service your car?Best Way to Save car fuel?
The timing belt has little to do with it. Generally they break before the stretch long enough to degrade performance much. So basically it's either fine or not running, as far as timing is concerned.

    How to save gas:

Use your cruise control on the highway. 60-70 mph will get you the best economy in most cars, but it depends on your car. Experiment and find the best cruising speed, and use it.

Proper tire inflation. Check your tires at least every few months, and any time they look low. Inflate them to the owners manual recommendation, or the recommendation on the sidewall of the tire, whichever is lower.

Smooth, gentle acceleration. Generally, you want to be around 2500-3000 rpms while accelerating in most 4 cylinders, maybe 1500-2500 in a larger engine, and as low as possible without lugging the engine while cruising.

Smooth, infrequent braking. Anticipate stops and get off the gas well before them. Coast to decrease speed. Sometimes you can entirely avoid having to stop this way (and restarting once you've stopped is what uses the most fuel) This is dependent upon traffic behind you, of course.

Drive behind trucks on the highway. DO....NOT....TAILGATE them. The truck drivers will hate you, and you're going to be really likely to die. You can be 2 seconds back and still get some benefit from the GIGANTIC hole that a truck punches in the air at 70 mph. (Truckers are also good at finding speed traps and accidents, since they know the roads better than anyone, and they talk to each other. It's a good idea to follow their lead in general.) TWO...SECOND...RULE.

get a low restriction free flowing intake manifold and exhaust manifold your engine will have to do less work to draw air in because of newtons first law of motion

a thing in motion will stay in the same direction unless applied to by an outside force so the engine has to apply a force to turn the air in the intake pipe and intake manifold (work=force x distance) if the intake pipe and manifold is straighter it doesn't need to apply a force so less work so better mileage

exhaust will need to do less work because it is less restriction so you need less force to force the exhaust gases out the exhaust valve and manifold

free flowing intake and exhaust manifolds with less restriction will allow air to flow better so more air and fuel can go in and out so more powerBest Way to Save car fuel?

first make sure your vehicle is properly tuned up, then check your tires and make sure they are aired up to specs. then clean your vehicle and unload any unnecessary weigt (i.e. those dirty clothes you have in the back, that 30 pairs of shoes and those used snack wrappers), also make sure to clean your car to make it more aerodynamic. also, use your air conditioner rather than rolling down windows.

lastly you need to learn to drive economically. when at a stoplight, start slow and dont try to be the first out of everybody there. if your car is manual, try to shift at the earliest rpm range. if automatic, do not step on the gas pedal too hard, just tap it lightly and wait for the gears to shift.Best Way to Save car fuel?
    Keep a tight eye on air pressure of tires (keep as high as you can to lower rolling resistance%26quot;

keep the trunk clean and empty

try to keep your max speed below 70km/hr limitting efects of air resistance

throttle up slowly from a stop

keep your speed as even as you can avoiding full stops as you can

use the best oil you can get with a teflon additive

keep the car in the best state of tune you can

use the best fuel using cheap gas will cost you more becase its low quality.

use the grade gas the manufacture recomendsBest Way to Save car fuel?
to tell you the truth with facts on the line here are my experienced tricks i do, i drive a v6 3.4L car. for aerodynamics, follow a big truck, the reduced drag with make ur car waaaayyy lighter and engine will work easier, i follow about 50 feet on 100km/h speed and saw 30% more mileage. slow down, if you keep revving high your engine will roll faster to pull more gas in a shorter time, keep tachometer as low as possible. take roues with less lights and stop signs, all they do is make you stop, and when u pick up speed again, low gears u have higher rpm requirement thus more fuel wasted. lastly if you waanna spend some dollars upgrade your chip, those things gave me 20 more kms on a 45L full tank, tested and proven.

Keep the car well maintained, Get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, change your air filter every time you change your oil. also make sure that your tire pressure is right because that can cause your gas milage to worsen. And try not to carry to much extra weight in your car. try buying the fuel injection cleaners for like 5 bucks and put it in your has tank before you fill it up do this every time you change your oil also. I bet you will get better gas milage.

  • How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?

I had to change the head gasket and i have looked every where to find out how to set the timing chain so the it will firer i put the lift down adn the piston top dead center and it wont start. i you have an idea how to set the timing please tell me .How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?
You take the little cap off that is on top of the block on the left side and you will see the flywheel. When you see it, either have someone move the kickstarter down slow or do it yourself with your hand while you lean over the bike and look down at the flywheel. What you are looking for is a mark with a T next to it. when you find it, the engine is at top dead center when it is lined up with the notch that is where you took the cap off.

Next you take the cap off of the cylinder head and align the mark on the cdi to the mark on the head. You will have to take the chain back off to do this of course. when both marks are lined up.. the bike is in time. How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?
You better do a little more research on this, there are other things involved. You'd better release the tensioner on the chain or it will be toast. I toasted one on an XR200 back around that time. Do some research on thumpertalk.com

Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?

Hello guys, I'm a proud owner of a Jeep Cherokee 1997, 6 cylinders, 4.0L, 2 doors. When I bought my %26quot;loyal friend%26quot; from a senior from Denver, Co, it used to had 117,000 on it,, now It's been 4 years since I bought it and I put a lot of miles on my Jeep. Now it has 158,528 miles and is still working good. I recently change the battery, the alternator and the radiator, this last one I had to do it because the antifreeze was leaking and I didn't realize about it until I got to Vegas. I drove it from Twin Falls, Id, all the way down to Sin City and I didn't realize about this problem. How dumb I was!!! Well the thing is that ultimately I'm driving my Jeep in long trips. I drove it to Seattle, WA, Las Vegas, NV, Boise, ID, Salt Lake City, UT, and I'm really concerned about the timing chain. I've heard that if the timing chain fails, my %26quot;loyal friend%26quot;, will die for sure. And the costs for repairs are expensive so I wanna have it replace it before it'll be too late. Today I went to Shucks Auto Parts and they told me that I don't need to replace my timing chain, since is timing chain and chain is much stronger than timing belt and plus last longer. I wanted hear a second opinion and I went to AutoZone, and they told me that yes, I need to have replaced the timing chain. Now I don't know who says the truth, cause the problem is not the timing chain price (it's just 49 bucks), the thing is, how much a good and HONEST car mechanic could charge me for replacing it?...So I need your opinion guys if I need to replace my timing chain or not if so, how much I have to expect for paying?..and one more question. By doing the replacement of timing chain, Do I have to replace the water pump also?...It's not leaking but since I'm driving my car long trips, I wanna take my precautions. Thank you, I hope you guys could help me

P.D.: JEEP ROCKS!!!Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
The timing BELT should be replaced every 75,000 miles. I have to assume the previous owner did so at the correct interval. AT 150K+ miles, you're due. If you do, in fact, have a timing CHAIN on a 1997 Jeep 4.0L, it would not need replacement based on mileage alone, but on wear. If you do replace the chain, replace the cam and crank gears also as a complete 3-piece set. Since you have to remove the water pump to get at the timing assembly, it's your call if you want to replace it. It should not be any additional labor, about 2 hours total.

If you just replace the water pump, you can pull the timing cover at that time and see first hand if you have a belt or a chain.

If you have a set of tools and a little mechanical know-how, this is a good afternoon project for the novice mechanic. You will get to know your car better and wil be able to understand why repair shops cost so much.Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
yes I think you should replace it..Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
TIME TO CHANGE DAT WHOLE WHIP !!!MAN UPGRADE DAT OL CLUNKER!!Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
No, you don't need to change it. I had the same thinking along time ago with the same 4.0L. I needed to change to water pump and thought of changing the time chain. I open it up and it was still tight. It's still good because of it being a short chain and a double roller.

If you have no problem with now, it'll be fine. Chain will stretch before it'll break. That stretching will cause the timing to be off and that's when you'll know it needs to change. I had 222k before selling the jeep and it was still running great.

    Timing Chain?

how often does the timing chain in GM's 3800 v6 need to be changed. I know with an OHC belt it needs to be changes 100k+ but this is a chain its stronger.Timing Chain?
With proper oil changes, it will outlast the rest of the engine. Should not need changing.Timing Chain?
Why do you want to change your timing chain?

Unlike the belt the timing chain makes noise wen it gets bad.

Your vehicle has little over 100 K, you may drive that car without changing the chain ever, or it may give up next day.

If you have your vehicle's manual, in the maintenance section they talk about when you need to change the belt/chain, but still, no one would know when would a chain brake.

    Good luck!Timing Chain?
You should never have to replace the timing chain except when you rebuild the engine.
